On the right, Vice President Alben W. Barkley and his wife Jane were driving cross country and stopped in Hillsboro to get gas. They stopped at the Willis Sturgeon gas station which was located on the West side of Main Street where the former Hillsboro National Bank building stands today. You can see the upstairs of the Opera House to the right of this photo and the Sherman's building in the background. This photo was taken sometime between 1949 and 1953. Barkley was Vice President under Harry S. Truman.

Thanks to Nancy Slepicka for her help identifying this photo.
