Ghost signs are found across Montgomery County with many towns having surviving examples. These are advertisement hand painted on brick that still remain. Many ghost signs from the 1890s to 1960s are still visible. Such signs were most commonly used in the decades before the Great Depression. Here are a few examples from Litchfield Illinois.
Hand Painted Falstaff Beer Sign - Located on the back side of Dan Heise Plumbing and Heating in Litchfield. The building was Brawley Bros. cigar factory and Falstaff distributorship for many years. It was later occupied by, Besant Electric before Dan Heise, Sr. bought it in the late 1970s or early 80s.
Back side of 120 W Union Litchfield - Several layers of paint on this one. I can make out Selz Royal Blue Shoes and Saloon. Most of these are easier to read when the building is wet.
